I met trouble on the street, it asked me for the time of day.
I checked my watch and answered, "Time you were on your way."
Trouble said, "Well, maybe I'll walk with you as you go."
I said, "Is there any way to stop you?" and trouble answered no.
So I walked on with trouble, we went down Ezekiel Street,
passing by those dry bones where a great army met defeat.
There were wheels above us in the sky, their sound a steady drone.
I saw how that made trouble smile, and I wished I was alone.
The longer I walked with trouble, the less I liked his company.
But he said, "You are all right, son, I think you belong with me."
We came back to my neighborhood, not saying too many words.
When we cut through the little park, I was watching all the birds.
I said to trouble, "Take a look - see that crow so big and black?
It's being chased by those two sparrows diving at its back."
"A flock of sparrows could do more but two will be enough.
You know they'll harry that big bird until it flies right off."
It was then my baby came along and took me by the hand.
I looked trouble in the face and said, "I think you understand."
Trouble turned to go and said, "We'll meet on down the line."
I answered, "Yeah, we always do - but you just take your time."
